Parktown was Johannesburg’s first proper suburb. The Randlords built their mansions up here on the ridge in the 1890s, Herbert Baker-designed homes on large stands, surrounded by formal gardens that were planted with the trees considered prestigious and permanent at the turn of the century. London planes, English oaks, Canary Island pines, Aleppo pines, monkey puzzle trees, blue atlas cedars. Trees chosen for grandeur rather than manageability.

Most of those homes are now heritage-listed or in conservation areas, and a significant number of those trees are still standing. Some are in remarkable shape. Some have been in slow decline for two decades. Some have grown to a scale that would present a challenge in any suburban garden and presents a very particular challenge here, on steep north-facing slopes, with century-old stone walls, koi ponds, formal garden layouts, and heritage buildings directly in the felling zone.

The Heritage Garden Dilemma: Remove or Retain?

On a Parktown property, the question of whether to fell a tree is rarely simple. A large plane tree that’s heaving the stone retaining wall may have been in that position for ninety years. A declining blue cedar near the heritage-listed façade is simultaneously a safety concern and a significant part of the property’s character. These decisions deserve careful thinking, not a quick quote and a chainsaw.

Our approach: assess the tree’s structural integrity honestly, consider whether remedial work, significant crown reduction, deadwood removal, cable bracing, is genuinely viable, and give you a clear picture of both options and their realistic costs. We don’t exaggerate risk to push unnecessary removals. We also don’t encourage retention of a structurally failing tree because the client is emotionally attached to it. We tell you what we see.

Tree pruning on large heritage trees is skilled work. Crown reduction on a fifty-year-old English oak has to follow the natural branch structure, never cutting back to stubs. Proper pruning by someone who knows what they’re doing can add years to a tree’s safe life and significantly reduce the risk profile of a large specimen.

Sectional Dismantling on Constrained Heritage Sites

Almost every tree removal in Parktown involves some degree of constrained access. The typical job: a large tree close to the house, a narrow single access gate on the street, a formal garden with pathways that won’t take equipment weight, a neighbouring property boundary two metres from the trunk.

Sectional dismantling, working from the top of the tree down, rigging each section down to a controlled landing zone before cutting further, is how we work on any site where a straight fell isn’t safely possible. On a site like a Parktown garden, with stone paving, formal features, and heritage structures within the felling zone, this approach is non-negotiable.

For the largest specimens, a mature plane tree or a big Canary Island pine near a listed structure, we will sometimes bring in crane rigging for sections that are too large and heavy to manage on a conventional rope system. Westcliff: Steep Slopes and Tricky Access

The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer beetle is present in Parktown as it is across Johannesburg’s urban forest. English oaks, a staple of the original Edwardian garden planting that defines Parktown’s character, are confirmed hosts. Affected oaks show bore holes in the bark, dark weeping stains, and dieback in the canopy.

Where we find PSHB during assessment, we report it clearly and discuss the realistic range of outcomes. Some affected trees are still structurally sound and can be monitored; others have declined to the point where removal is the only safe choice. We won’t encourage you to spend money on a tree that can’t be saved. We also handle affected timber carefully to prevent spreading the beetle, chipping on-site or responsible transport, never moving rounds intact.
