Here’s something you won’t often see on a local service website: we’re going to tell you upfront that Witbank is not in Gauteng. eMalahleni, to use the current name, the one that better suits a town that’s been a coal-mining centre since the 1890s, sits in Mpumalanga, about 130 kilometres east of Johannesburg along the N4. It’s outside our standard Gauteng service area. We’re telling you this not to put you off, but because we’d rather you know exactly what you’re dealing with than find out on the quote.

What an extended call-out actually involves

When we travel to eMalahleni, we plan it like a proper expedition rather than a suburban morning job. The call-out is typically a full day: we leave Joburg early, we’re on site when the dew is still on the grass, and we aim to have everything we need with us, chainsaw crew, chipper, stump grinder, rigging gear, so the job doesn’t stall waiting for a piece of equipment.

Because the travel cost is real, we try to combine Witbank visits where we can. If there are two or three jobs in the area on the same day, the travel component spreads across them. We’ll sometimes ask if you know of neighbours or other plot owners in the same area who’ve been looking for tree work, not a condition of coming out, just a sensible question that can reduce costs for everyone involved.

The jobs we make the trip for are typically: multiple large trees on a plot or farm that will occupy a full crew for most of a day; storm-damage clearance after a significant event that’s left trees down on structures or blocking access; large individual specimens, bluegums, old Australian acacias, overgrown ornamentals near farm buildings, that present genuine risks and require professional removal. If your job is a single modest tree on a residential stand in the centre of eMalahleni town, we’re probably not the right call. There will be local operators who can do that without charging you for a 260-kilometre round trip.

Removals on Highveld plots and farms

The vegetation around eMalahleni and the farms east and south of town has a particular character. The Highveld here is drier and more open than Johannesburg’s urban forest, grassland, rocky kopjes, the scrubby native bushveld where the soil is thin. What you do find on the farms and plots are trees that were planted deliberately: windbreaks of eucalyptus and cypress along plot boundaries, old blue gums near farmsteads, stands of black wattle that have seeded themselves across a hillside and become a problem, large ornamentals near the homestead that someone planted in 1975 and that are now pushing walls or overhanging the roof.

Bluegums in the Mpumalanga Highveld get large. The combination of decent rainfall, eMalahleni gets more than Johannesburg, and relatively deep soils on agricultural land means a bluegum planted as a windbreak in the 1980s can be a thirty-metre tree today. Dead bluegums are common on plots that have changed ownership or been neglected: the tree dies standing, the bark holds on for a few years, and by the time someone really looks at it there’s a hollow-hearted giant that is one good thunderstorm away from a serious event.

For farm and plot removals we often use the full-fell method where conditions allow, drop the tree whole into open ground, cut and chip in place, grind the stump. This is faster and cheaper than sectional dismantling, and on open farmland there’s usually room to plan a safe drop zone. Near structures, we do it properly in sections regardless of the extra time. The choice is made on site, based on what’s actually there, not on what’s easier for us.

Stumps, cleanup and leaving the place better than we found it

After clearing a stand or removing a problem tree on a Witbank smallholding, the stump question comes up. Our grinder takes stumps to 150 to 300 millimetres below surface level. On farm soil, often better-draining and less rocky than the West Rand ridges, this tends to be a reasonably straightforward process even for large-diameter stumps.

For properties where there are multiple stumps across a large area, we can grind the lot in sequence and leave the site clear of above-ground obstacles. Firewood rounds from felled trees can be stacked and left on site if you want them; everything else, chips, green waste, offcuts, we take away or chip in place as mulch for your beds.
