Morningside has one of the more interesting mixes of property types in Sandton. You’ve got large freehold homes on Rivonia Road with established gardens, planes, oaks, and the odd enormous pine, sitting next door to residential complexes and security estates where a body corporate is responsible for fifteen mature trees and a shared access road that wasn’t designed with a wood chipper in mind.

Both situations need proper tree management. The homeowner with an oak that’s lifted the driveway and shed a limb over the pool has a different set of concerns from the complex trustee dealing with three storm-damaged cypress trees, a contractor quote that looks suspicious, and a set of residents who all have opinions. Freehold Gardens: Planes, Oaks, and the Trees That Got Away

The older freehold properties in Morningside North and around Rivonia Road have had decades to accumulate large trees. London planes in particular can get enormous, beautiful shade trees with dense canopies that, once they’ve grown into overhead lines or started cracking the pavement, become a significant removal project.

Oak trees are slightly more manageable but present their own issues: surface roots that heave paving, leaf litter that blocks drains, and branches that extend over boundaries far enough to become a neighbour dispute waiting to happen. Pin oaks and English oaks both grow vigorously in Johannesburg’s climate.

For trees of this size and complexity, sectional dismantling is typically how we work: the canopy comes down in controlled sections from the top, rigged clear of the structures below. Complexes and Body Corporates: What You Actually Need to Know

If you’re a trustee or a facilities manager in a Morningside complex, the tree conversation usually comes up one of two ways: either after a storm when something has fallen, or when you finally deal with a tree that’s been on the agenda for three AGMs running.

A few things that make complex tree work different from a standard freehold job:

Access and timing. Residents’ parking, narrow access roads, boom gates, and shared driveways all require coordination. We visit the site before quoting, assess the access routes, and schedule work to minimise disruption to residents. Early starts are possible, we work from 7am Monday to Saturday.

The PSHB Beetle: A Growing Problem in Morningside Gardens

The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) beetle has become a serious issue across Johannesburg’s northern suburbs over the past several years. It affects a wide range of host trees, box elder maples, Japanese maples, English oaks, and several other ornamental species commonly found in Morningside gardens. Infested trees show characteristic patterns: small circular entry holes, dark staining on the bark, and eventually branch dieback.

There is currently no cure for heavily infested trees. We identify PSHB-affected trees during site assessments and advise honestly on condition. Trees that have declined to the point of structural risk need removal; trees in early stages may benefit from monitoring and targeted pruning. We dispose of PSHB-affected timber responsibly, it should not be moved off-site as unsplit rounds, as this spreads the beetle.

Storm Season Preparation and Emergency Call-Out

The storms from October through to March can be dramatic, and a large plane or oak with a heavy, unmanaged canopy is more vulnerable to storm damage than a properly pruned specimen.
