If you live in Montana, you already know the deal. Your garden doesn’t just back onto the suburb, it backs onto the Magaliesberg foothills, onto koppies, onto patches of real bushveld. That’s one of the great things about living up here in Pretoria North. It’s also the thing that makes tree work genuinely complicated.
Rocky ground under a thin layer of topsoil. Thorn trees that have spent twenty years growing sideways around the rocks. Syringa weed trees that seeded themselves into the retaining wall. And every October, a Highveld storm that reminds you exactly which branches were overextended. Tree Hugger Collective has been working in gardens like yours for years, tree felling, stump grinding, storm cleanup, the full picture. We know what grows here, what causes problems here, and how to work safely when the ground beneath your tree is more koppie than lawn.
Free on-site quotes, no upselling, and we leave the place tidy. That’s the short version.
Most suburban tree work happens on flat, deep soil with good access. Montana is a different story. Many properties here sit at the edge of the Magaliesberg foothills, gardens that slope sharply, that have granite outcrops, that transition from manicured lawn straight into veld within twenty metres.
The trees that grow in these conditions are tough. Wild figs rooted into rock faces. Acacia karoo, the sweet thorn, that’s seeded itself along the back fence and grown into a multi-stemmed tangle. Syringa weed trees (Melia azedarach) that spring up fast, look lush for a decade, and then start lifting your paving or undermining a boundary wall. Indigenous koppie trees like wild olive and buffalo thorn are worth keeping where you can, but when they’ve grown over the roof or blocked a view, they need professional hands.
Rocky ground also changes how stump removal works. Standard grinder access isn’t always possible on a steep, rocky slope. Our team assesses each job on the ground before quoting. No surprises.
Sweet thorn, black thorn, hook thorn, the acacias are part of the Montana landscape, and we’re not here to argue that they don’t belong. But when one has grown into the power lines, split after a storm, or is pushing through your boundary wall, it needs to come down safely.
Acacia removal in tight spots, against a wall, over a neighbour’s roof, close to a patio, requires sectional dismantling rather than a straight fell. Our team rigs sections down in a controlled sequence so nothing drops where it shouldn’t. We work this way as standard practice when the felling zone is restricted, which on a rocky koppie-edge property it often is. All debris is cleared and either chipped on-site or hauled away for recycling.
Syringa weed (Melia azedarach) is one of the most common problem trees in Pretoria North gardens. It grows quickly, gives shade fast, and looks perfectly fine right up until the root system starts having opinions about your paving, your boundary wall, or your irrigation pipes.
We remove syringa trees regularly across Montana and the surrounding areas. After felling, we grind the stump 150-300 mm below ground to prevent resprouting, because syringa stumps that aren’t ground out will reshoot vigorously. We also carry out garden and landscape restoration after removal, so the gap in your garden doesn’t stay a muddy scar.
Stump grinding is a separate service worth booking at the same time as felling, it’s more cost-effective to do both in one visit.
Montana gets hit hard by Highveld storms. The late-afternoon summer storms that roll in from the west between October and March are not gentle. A half-snapped acacia leaning over the roof, a large branch through a carport, these are not things you can leave until Monday.
Tree Hugger Collective offers 24/7 emergency call-outs for storm-damaged trees. Ring 0860 017 435 any time. We also WhatsApp, https://wa.me/27836400247, if you want to send photos first so we can assess before we arrive.
We work safely and systematically even under pressure. Emergency work still gets done right.
Not everything needs to come down. A large acacia that’s providing shade and screening but has grown top-heavy and wind-vulnerable can often be saved with proper structural pruning, thinning, crown reduction, and selective removal of dead or crossing branches. We do this carefully, following pruning best practice. We don’t top trees: topping destroys structure, promotes rot, and makes trees more dangerous within a few seasons, not less.
Tree pruning and trimming is a separate service worth discussing when you book your free quote. Sometimes a well-pruned tree is the better outcome for the garden.
We also cover nearby areas including Wonderboom and Pretoria East, see our areas we serve page.

Reviews
Had a massive sweet thorn split right down the middle after a storm, leaning over the kitchen roof and the braai area. Called Tree Hugger on a Sunday night, they were out first thing Monday. Rigged the whole thing down in sections, stump ground the same day, garden looked clean by lunchtime. Brilliant work, sensible price.
Good to know
Yes, we work on uneven, rocky ground regularly in Montana and the Magaliesberg foothills area. We assess access and ground conditions as part of your free on-site quote and plan accordingly. Sectional dismantling is standard when a straight fell isn't safe or practical.
We grind stumps 150-300 mm below the surface, which removes the crown and prevents resprouting. Syringa in particular reshoots vigorously from the stump if it isn't ground out, so we always recommend grinding at the same time as felling.
Any situation where a tree or large branch poses immediate danger to a structure, person, or vehicle, storm-split trees, trees leaning onto roofs, fallen trees blocking access. We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for these jobs. Call 0860 017 435.
