Tree Felling in Melrose: Two Very Different Neighbourhoods, One Approach

Melrose is two places at once. There’s Melrose Arch, the mixed-use precinct with its tight streetscapes, manicured planting, commercial buildings, and foot traffic. And then there’s Melrose North and Birdhaven: quiet, leafy, genuinely old-money streets where the trees have been growing for sixty or seventy years and the gardens feel more like small parks than suburban plots.

The tree issues are correspondingly different. At the Arch end, it’s mostly commercial landscape management, trees in planters and shared spaces that need to be dealt with outside trading hours. In Melrose North and Birdhaven, you’re more likely to have a large London plane that’s lifted the entire driveway, an ageing pin oak with a limb hanging over the neighbour’s boundary, or one of the enormous old pines that were fashionable planting fifty years ago and are now a liability.

Old Gardens, Established Trees, Real Problems

The streets of Melrose North and Birdhaven, Melrose Drive, Aintree Avenue, the quiet cul-de-sacs running east of Corlett Drive, are full of the kind of trees that Johannesburg’s northern suburbs grew up on. London planes planted as street trees that have become enormous. Pines from an era when fast-growing conifers were considered good garden design. A scattering of magnificent old oak trees on corner plots. Fig trees that have been in the same spot since before the house was built.

These trees are part of what makes this part of Johannesburg feel like it does. They’re also, in many cases, at a stage of their life where they need professional attention. Root systems lifting paving, cracking walls, and infiltrating drainage. Canopies that have grown into overhead electricity lines. Dead or dying branches that shed unpredictably, and in a suburb with dense garden planting and close boundaries, unpredictable shedding is a genuine risk.

We assess each tree individually. Not everything that looks concerning is structurally compromised. Not everything that looks healthy is safe. Good advice depends on someone who actually knows trees looking at your specific specimen, not a quoting contractor who walks in and assumes the worst.

Pine Trees: When They’ve Outlived Their Position

Pine trees are a particular feature of older Melrose and Birdhaven gardens. Mediterranean stone pines, cluster pines, patula pines, all planted in the mid-twentieth century as fast shade and screening. They did the job. They’re also, in many cases, now thirty metres tall, dropping pine cones and needles year-round into the pool, blocking southern light from the garden entirely, and presenting a significant removal challenge because of their size and the restricted access typical of mature Johannesburg gardens.

Large pine removal typically involves crane or rigging work, sections of trunk and branch too large and heavy to lower by hand alone are rigged down to a designated landing zone. We use proper arborist rigging equipment and techniques, not improvised solutions. On properties where site access is limited, a single gate, a narrow driveway, we plan the job meticulously before starting.

Stump grinding after pine removal is important: pine stumps decay but don’t reshoot, so grinding is primarily about removing the trip hazard and allowing replanting. Pine root plates can be wide, and we’ll discuss depth and extent of grinding at the quote stage.

Melrose Arch and Commercial Landscape Trees

Tree work in the Melrose Arch precinct and the commercial and retail properties along the Corlett Drive corridor requires scheduling sensitivity. Most straightforward work, pruning, minor removals, is done outside peak trading hours. Larger jobs that involve equipment on the pavement or in car parks are coordinated with the relevant property manager.

The PSHB Beetle in Birdhaven and Melrose North

The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer has been confirmed in the Melrose and Birdhaven area, as it has across much of suburban Johannesburg. English oaks, a significant component of Melrose North’s garden flora, are among the beetle’s confirmed host species. Affected trees show characteristic bore holes in the bark, dark staining, and progressive canopy thinning.

We flag PSHB symptoms during every site assessment. In some cases the damage is manageable; in others the tree has declined beyond recovery and represents a structural risk.
