The West Rand is old ground, Precambrian dolomite and quartzite ridges that have been folding and fracturing for two billion years while the rest of us weren’t watching. Krugersdorp sits right on top of it: rocky, elevated, with views that remind you this is the edge of the Highveld, where the land starts to rumple and drop away westward. It’s a different landscape from Johannesburg’s flat suburban spread, and it produces different tree problems.

Rocky ground, dolomite, and why stumps here are a different prospect

The thing about Krugersdorp’s geology is that it makes itself known the moment you point a grinder at a stump. In sandy Johannesburg soil, grinding a moderate stump is a straightforward afternoon’s work. Out here, the grinder often hits rock within a few centimetres, quartzite fragments, dolomite bedrock, ironstone inclusions, and the whole operation requires more patience, more passes and occasionally a different approach entirely.

We know this going in, which is why we assess stumps properly on the quote rather than quoting flat-rate and hoping for the best. In most cases we still get the stump down to the standard 150 to 300 millimetres below ground level that renders it safe for paving or planting over. On genuinely hard bedrock situations we’re honest with you about what’s achievable and what the options are. Sometimes the sensible approach is a deep grind to below visible surface; sometimes it’s clearing the area to rock level and capping it. Either way you get a clear honest conversation, not a surprise on the day.

Dolomite is also worth a word on its own. Krugersdorp and the areas south of it toward the Cradle of Humankind sit on some of the most significant dolomitic ground in South Africa, it’s a factor in how you build, where you plant and yes, sometimes, why a specific tree root system is relevant to more than just your garden wall. We’re not engineers and we won’t pretend to be, but we’re aware of dolomite as a context and we work accordingly.

Smallholdings, big old trees and the jobs that take a full day

The smallholdings stretching west from Krugersdorp toward Tarlton and out beyond the Krugersdorp Game Reserve are another thing entirely. These plots tend to have mature trees that have never been managed, self-sown bluegums that grew into twenty-metre giants while the farm was being used for something else, old black wattles that have spread from a windbreak into a small forest, the occasional enormous wild mulberry that has been doing exactly as it pleased for forty years.

Bluegums (Eucalyptus species) are the most common culprit on West Rand smallholdings. They grow spectacularly fast on the Highveld, they’re drought-tolerant, they provide quick shade, and after twenty-odd years they’re also large, structurally unpredictable and flammable. Dead bluegums are a particular concern: they can retain their outer bark and look plausibly alive while the interior has rotted hollow, and a hollow bluegum in a West Rand wind is the kind of thing that removes a fence or a roof without much warning.

For these larger rural jobs we bring whatever equipment the site needs: chainsaw crews, rigging for trees near structures, a chipper for the green waste, stump grinder for the aftermath. We plan the drop zone properly, we don’t just guess which way things fall. On open smallholding ground we can often fell whole trees into clear areas, which is faster and cheaper than sectional dismantling, though for trees near buildings or fences we still take the slow careful route. The cleanup comes with the job: we leave the plot clear, and if you want firewood rounds stacked on site rather than chipped, we’ll do that.

Removal, grinding and putting the garden back together

Once the dangerous or overgrown trees are out of the way, Krugersdorp properties often benefit from a proper tidy: stump grinding on multiple stumps across a site, clearing the self-seeded invasives that have taken hold around the base of bigger trees, maybe some remedial pruning on trees that are worth keeping.

Tree pruning on smallholdings tends to be the practical kind, lifting canopies so vehicles can pass underneath, removing deadwood from large trees before it drops onto a shed, thinning out the canopy of an old jacaranda that’s become too dense and heavy. We don’t do cosmetic butchery. The cuts we make follow proper arboricultural practice: they’re made where the tree can heal, they target the problem, and they leave the tree in genuinely better structural shape than we found it.

For the residential suburbs, Krugersdorp North, Westhaven, Kenmare and the rest, the work is closer to the standard Joburg suburban model: sectional removals in tight gardens, stumps in established lawns, pruning trees that have grown into power lines or over roofs.
