The Blouberg Wind Problem, and What It Does to Trees

The Cape Doctor is relentless on this stretch of coast. The south-easter funnels up from the Atlantic and hits the low, open West Coast suburbs with almost no topographic barrier, no mountain shoulder, no valley protection, just flat coastal plain. For trees, this means constant directional stress. Shallow-rooted species lean. Storm-damaged limbs hang on for months until a strong gust finally sends them down. And recently-planted trees that were never properly staked in the first place grow at angles that eventually become structural problems.

After a particularly hard south-easter season, we typically see a wave of work: fallen garden trees, snapped-off palm crowns, broken branches that came down on fences and garden structures, and leaning trees that have been ignoring physics for one season too many.

The wet Cape winter adds a different dimension. A proper north-westerly winter storm, the kind that rolls in off the Atlantic and dumps 80 mm over a weekend, saturates the sandy coastal soils and makes even well-established trees vulnerable to root failure. Large Port Jacksons in particular, with their dense canopies and relatively shallow roots in coastal dune sand, can go over suddenly when the soil is wet.

Invasive Species on the West Coast: What Needs to Come Out

The stretch of coastline from Table View to Melkbosstrand has a serious invasive species problem that pre-dates most of the residential development. Port Jackson willow (Acacia saligna), rooikrans (Acacia cyclops) and Australian myrtle (Leptospermum laevigatum) are all classified invaders and all thrive in coastal dune conditions.

They’re also prolific seeders. A Port Jackson on a neighbouring vacant lot will seed into your garden. Rooikrans spreads along the dune face. Australian myrtle, commonly planted as a windbreak in older Blouberg gardens, has since become a Category 2 invader and should be removed where it’s spreading.

We clear all three. The work varies by scale, a garden boundary with a few established Port Jacksons is a half-day job; a larger stand on a vacant coastal lot requires a full crew and a chipper run. We advise on follow-up stump treatment where regrowth is a concern, particularly with Port Jackson which can reshoot from a stump if not treated.

One important note: some naturally occurring trees in coastal areas around Bloubergstrand are protected. Milkwood (Sideroxylon inerme) is a specifically protected tree under national legislation, it cannot be felled, damaged or removed without authorisation, and the penalties are serious. If you have what looks like a milkwood on your property or encroaching from a neighbour, tell us when you call. We’ll identify it and advise on the correct process. We won’t touch a protected specimen without the right paperwork.

Garden Trees and Landscaping on Coastal Properties

Beyond the invasives, Blouberg gardens contain a mix of trees that people actually want but that still need management: large palms that drop their dead fronds onto roofs and cars, wild figs that were a good idea until the roots found the stormwater drain, established trees that shade out solar panels, and ornamental specimens that have simply grown past their intended size.

Tree pruning in a high-wind coastal environment needs to be done thoughtfully. Reducing crown density, thinning, rather than cutting back hard, lets wind pass through rather than push against a solid canopy. That single change can significantly reduce the risk of a tree failing in a strong south-easter or winter gale. Crown lifting, raising the lower canopy clear of rooflines and garden structures, is also standard maintenance in this wind zone.
